The Act Out study group was formed in order to provide a venue for those members of MWI who love to be involved in dramatic experiences. Through the process of preparation and rehearsal of a Broadway performance piece, participants learn professional theatrical techniques utilized both in preparation and performance. Opportunities are provided for those members who prefer the backstage technical aspects which provide the support for the actors, while others act as "swings," (actors who are able to step into any role when needed.)
Auditions are held where all who are interesed are given the opportunity to "try out" for a part. Depending on the play's characters, the director will assign roles. Performances are "staged readings;" actors are taught to move, use props and costumes, interact with other characters, but do not need to memorize the script. Rehearsals increase in number closer to the performance date.
The membership of MWI and the actors' families are invited to the performance; there is no charge for tickets.
Once you have experienced Act Out, your perspective while being an audience member at your next live Broadway play will give you greater insight into what the actors and "techies" are experiencing. You might even feel like you could do it better!
Act Out gives you the opportunity to leave yourself in the wings, step out into the lights, and become someone new!
