Zucker School of Medicine
We are pleased to announce that we have resumed our support of the summer research internship program at the Zucker School of Medicine after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic. On June 22, 2022, a check was presented to the Zucker School of Medicine at our Installation/Philanthropy event at Plainview Jewish Center.
Medical students have the opportunity to do research in different fields of interest during the summer between their first and second years of medical school. Since the program is not required, it relies on funding from organizations like MWI.
There have been many research projects suported by MWI over our 10 year association with the school. One of the projects was research on various aspects of telemedicine, long before telemedicine became a household word due to the pandemic.
Another interesting project was that, in order for doctors to develop rapport with their patients, the intern puts a few key words in the chart, i.e. enjoys baseball, likes to knit, etc. This allows the doctor to put the patient at ease by talking about their interests before examining them. Why didn't anyone think about this before!
Of course there have been many more complicated research projects, which as laymen, are difficult to understand and therefore can't be listed here.
Zucker School of Medicine is so appreciative of our support of the summer intern research program that there is a plaque on the wall dedicated to MWI. Hopefully, in the future we will once again be able to tour the medical school and you will be able to see the plaque.
MWI is proud to be investing in the future of these doctors by supporting this program, thus enabling them to broaden their knowledge.
